COURT HOUSE – Middle Township has begun the demolition of abandoned, neglected properties that have been identified to be a safety hazard in various communities. The first building demolition occurred last week at 312 Linden Lane. The abandoned house was taken down so it would not attract children or other individuals who could put themselves and the neighborhood in harm’s way.
“We have made it very clear that this administration will follow a systematic approach to demolishing long-neglected buildings that can pose a danger to children and a neighborhood”, said Middle Township Mayor Tim Donohue. “We exhaust every effort to have a dialogue with the property owner before the decision is made for the Township to remove the property. This program improves neighborhoods, eliminates dangerous buildings, and comes at no cost to the taxpayers of Middle Township”.
After every effort is made to negotiate with the property owner, Middle Township places a lien on the property and begins the demolition process. Middle Township Administrator Constance Mahon conducted a review of all of these structures in Middle Township and took the legal steps necessary for demolition. Highest priority will be given to structures that remain in neighborhoods where children are present. It is estimated that this initial funding will afford the Township the ability to demolish at least ten structures in Middle Township.
Salvatore DeSimone is overseeing this demolition project for Middle Township. DeSimone is a Commissioner in Middle Township Fire District #2 and he has vast knowledge about the procedures needed to effectuate demolitions of unsafe and uninhabitable properties. “This was the first structure to come down”, DeSimone said. “We are committed to continue the program”.
