COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Committee adopted an ordinance Dec. 16 that raised annual residential sewer rates from $560 to $640. The residential rates had not been raised since 2012.
Mayor Timothy Donohue said that rising Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) costs and the need for improvements in the sewer system infrastructure left committee with no choice but to raise rates.
The township’s aging sewer system needs major infrastructure investment, including the upgrading of 22 pump stations. Stormwater and groundwater infiltration are suspected culprits in rising costs from the MUA. Donohue expressed the hope that new investment could help “bend the cost curve down for the future.”
Commercial and hotel/motel rates, which were increased last year, will remain the same.
