COURT HOUSE — About 200 hearty runners converged at Memorial Field April 22 to participate in the Boston Marathon Memorial 2-Mile Run-Walk to help raise funds for The One Fund Boston that will aid families affected by the deadly bomb blasts at the Boston Marathon a week earlier.
Organized by the Middle Township Recreation Department in a short time by, the run was held on a track aptly named Memorial Field for those who died, although years earlier. Joining the runners to help then tone muscles was Recreation Director Keith Fonesca with Recreation Leaders Tammy Devitt and Robert Matthews.
Carole Donohue, and her husband, Middle Township Deputy Mayor Timothy Donohue, were in Boston when the blasts went off. Donohue had just completed her eighth Boston Marathon about 15 minutes before the bombs detonated close to the finish line.
She briefly addressed the runners about her thoughts on that momentous, historic event.
Joining the afternoon event was the Middle Township Police Department Color Guard.
Mayor Daniel Lockwood and Deputy Mayor Donohue welcomed and briefly addressed the runners, many of whom were bundled up against a steady, bone-chilling wind.
Pastor Charlie P’Hara of Lighthouse Church gave the invocation.
Funds raised at the memorial run will benefit The One Fund Boston.
Devitt, at Middle Township Recreation Department, plans to continue to collect donations until April 26, when she will send them all to the One Fund in Boston.
Those who, on their own, wish to make donations to that fund may send checks to: One Fund Boston, Inc. , 800 Boylston Street #990009, Boston, Mass, 02199.
