Middle Revises Beach Vehicle Ban

COURT HOUSE – In January, Middle Township Committee introduced an ordinance banning non-essential vehicles from access to Delaware bayside beaches. Instead of the expected public hearing on the ordinance Feb. 19, the township amended and re-introduced it.
The intent, according to Mayor Timothy Donohue, is to strike the “right balance” by making necessary provision for those who need access while protecting the habitat and the public safety from vehicles that pose safety and environmental concerns.
Exceptions to the ban include aquaculturists (such as those raising oysters) engaged in legal agricultural activities authorized by the state, as well as township employees and agents of federal and state agencies.
A new hearing will be held March 16 at 6 p.m.
