COURT HOUSE—The Middle Township Police Department this week was awarded a $24,000 grant from the state Attorney General’s Office to assist with the purchase of body cameras for officers.
Middle Township’s Police Department was one of 176 agencies to receive a grant. In all, $2.5 million was awarded, with the average award being approximately $14,000. The grant funds were generated through criminal-forfeitures.
The grant will be used along with Capital funds approved by Township Committee earlier this year to equip every officer with a body camera. The $24,000 award will fund the purchase of 48 cameras. “We need to give our officers the tools to do their jobs effectively and these body cameras will do just that.” stated Chief Christopher Leusner.
“I want to thank Chief Leusner for his hard work on this funding initiative,” Mayor Tim Donohue said. “Once we reached a consensus on the need for body cameras and tested the units, we worked hard to seek grant funding to cover the large start-up costs. We appreciate the Governor’s effort to find this funding and quickly move forward to address this important need.”
