COURT HOUSE — At a special meeting of American Legion Post 198 in Cape May Court House, Middle Township Mayor Tim Donohue met with local veterans to discuss seeking funding to renovate the grounds and meeting hall, originally built in 1947. Post membership has dwindled and the upkeep of the property stretches the group’s small annual budget.
Donohue presented the members with a list of questions seeking details on the ownership and financial status of the Post. The Mayor also sought input from Post 198 members on what their ideal plan would be for the future of the property. The Post members planned to meet to discuss their collective vision, before meeting with Mayor Donohue again at a future date.
The Mayor first discussed the possibility of the Township partnering with local veterans to improve conditions on the site during the Township’s annual Memorial Day services.
“We gather as town on this site annually to honor and remember those who have fallen in defense of our country. It is always an inspiring and dignified commemoration, organized by Post 198 American Legion members,” Donohue said. “As a society, we owe an unending debt of gratitude to our veterans and their families. I’m committed to working with the Legion Post members to rally support and raise funds to upgrade this historic and honorable site, for these vets and for future generations.”
Donohue said one possible plan would call for the construction of a veterans’ memorial park on the site. The site could include a small museum component to educate residents on the courage and sacrifice of Middle Township veterans, dating back to the American Revolution, as well as a meeting place for the Post and other civic groups.
“Our goal is to support the American Legion’s vision for this historically significant property,” Donohue said. “In this role we would facilitate public awareness and fundraising efforts both here in Middle Township and to the broader network of the many fine groups that support and promote veteran’s causes. It saddens me every time I drive by this property and see the disrepair. We owe it to our vets to ensure this site is one they can be proud to call their own.”
The above release was received from the Township of Middle.
