COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Committee’s meeting May 15 was accented by a series of awards presented to township residents and employees.
Noah Granigan, a cyclist with the University of Colorado Boulder, recently won gold at the United States National Criterium Championships, an annual event run by USA Cycling. The event was held in Boulder, Colo. in April.
Committee member Jeffrey DeVico proudly announced that “Middle Township has a national champion in the room,” just before Granigan was presented with the Mayor’s Certificate of Honor.
The committee also presented an award to three local businessmen who recently volunteered their time and expertise to repaint and refurbish the flag pole at American Legion Post 198 on Dias Creek Road.
Dave Cohn, Allan Bowman, and Michael Hughes were all honored as part of the Middle Matters series of awards through which the township recognizes significant contributions to the life of the local community. Only Cohn was able to attend.
In addition Middle Township Police Officer Justin Vitola was named May Employee of the Month. Awards are not new for Vitola who was cited for saving a life during the police department’s awards ceremony in 2015. At the same awards event in 2017, Vitola was cited for his community service.
This year as part of the department’s Fatal Crash Investigation Unit, Vitola helped stage a two-car accident just outside Middle Township High School’s food court. Educating teens on the potentially fatal consequences of automobile accidents may help to reduce the distracted driving problems prevalent to the age group.
In an otherwise routine night of regular business, the committee authorized the mayor to execute a license agreement with Atlantic City Electric for the pedestrian bike path connector with the Lower Township bike path. Pre-construction meetings should begin soon.
Next on the bike path expansion plans will be the move north from the Cape May County Zoo area to Dennis Township which will give Middle Township a fully interconnected path across the municipality.
