COURT HOUSE – Building on energy efficiency steps approved last month, Middle Township locked down significant savings on its energy bills for 2013 and beyond, at a special meeting held on Nov. 27, 2012. Results from a reverse energy auction of gas and electricity provided by Commercial Utility Consultants, will provide 2013 savings of $14,698. These savings consist of contracting the township’s natural gas usage saving $2,034; contracting 34 electric accounts saving $9,746; and contracting the street lighting accounts saving $2,918. These contracts, signed by Mayor Dan Lockwood, are in addition to the Township’s participation in competitive third party supplier contracts through a municipal co-op.
“The cost of government has many drivers.” Mayor Lockwood said. “Some are beyond our control. But any time we have an opportunity to lower costs, without affecting services to our residents, we will pursue it aggressively.”
This latest step builds on plans already in motion to replace the antiquated and inefficient HVAC system in Town Hall. Seventy percent of the cost of this project will be covered by a state grant. The Township portion of the project cost will be offset by the energy savings of the new high efficiency system in approximately one year.
Looking toward the future the Township is currently exploring the viability of solar projects and applying for grants to replace the aging HVAC systems at both the Davis Sports Complex in Goshen and the Martin Luther King Center in Whitesboro.
