Middle Breaks Ground at Ockie Wisting Recreation Complex

By Press Release

RIO GRANDE – Middle Township officials broke ground Sept. 12 at the Robert “Ockie” Wisting Recreation Complex, 7 Fulling Mill Road. The 82-acre former Fort Apache Campground site will be developed into a recreation complex through a $582,000 in funding from the Cape May County Open Space Program.
Recreational opportunities at the complex will feature a wildlife observation deck, boardwalk and fishing pier at the pond area, as well as a gazebo and picnic area. Other amenities will include a playground, walking trails, fitness stations and a stage for acoustic performances, according to a release.
The site will also have five soccer fields and a regulation-size disc golf course. Those elements are being funded through public-private partnerships with Cape Express Soccer and the Cape May County Disc Golf Association.
“We are very excited to finally break ground on this ambitious project at Ockie Wisting Recreation Complex,” Mayor Timothy Donohue stated. “This endeavor is a great example of our efforts to bring good people together to do good work. Through a collaborative effort between the Township, Cape May County, Green Acres and our private partners, our vision of a premier recreation destination in Rio Grande is about to become a reality. The Ockie Wisting Recreation Complex will offer unique recreation opportunities for residents of all ages.”
