COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Mayor Timothy Donohue said it was time to resist “the death by a thousand cuts,” as he explained the resolution declaring the municipality a “Second Amendment/Lawful Gun Owner Sanctuary.”
Donohue admitted that Middle Township Committee has “no technical power” over gun rights laws. The resolution carries moral weight, as an expression of the sentiment of the municipality toward increasing legislative actions to further restrict gun rights.
Donohue cited state Assembly Bill 6003, which would require gun owners to carry firearm liability insurance.
Calling the current legislative proposal “a bridge too far,” Donohue warned about “the slippery slope” of incremental legislation, restricting Second Amendment rights.
Several members of the public, some of whom came from outside the municipality, praised the vote, with one speaking against the resolution.
The action follows on the heels of a similar declaration by Cape May County freeholders (http://bit.ly/30YXfnD).
