COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Committee approved a new five-year agreement with the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) March 18 for use of the solid waste transfer station on Shunpike Road in Burleigh.
The transfer station is used by municipalities to the south as a location to deposit solid waste, avoiding a trip to the Woodbine sanitary landfill. By law, solid waste deposited at the transfer station is subsequently trucked to the landfill within 24 hours.
An agreement with the MUA provides a tipping fee as compensation for the township. The tipping fee is an amount per ton of solid waste deposited at the station.
The previous agreement with the MUA set that amount at $1.91 per ton. This new agreement raises the fee to $2.03 per ton.
At a governing body meeting in November 2018, township officials sought a more substantial increase in the tipping fee. MUA Executive Director Joseph Rizzuto argued for no increase, as he cited a declining number of trips from the transfer station to the landfill since 2015.
The agreement with the MUA runs through 2023.
