McGrath Retires as Crest Police Chief

Wildwood Crest Police Chief Joseph McGrath.

By Shay Roddy

WILDWOOD CREST – Dec. 27 marked the final Borough Commission meeting of the Chief Joseph McGrath era. Although the Wildwood Crest police chief was unable to attend, due to a scheduling conflict, some colleagues and community members took the opportunity to thank him for 25 years of service.
City Clerk Patricia Feketics, Police Capt. Robert Lloyd, and Commissioner David Thompson each took time during the public comment period to express appreciation for the chief.
Then Lt. McGrath took over as the officer-in-charge in April 2014, as the department was enveloped in an internal affairs investigation that led to Capt. David Mayer’s departure. Mayer had been in charge of the department for just over three months; he replaced longtime Chief Thomas DePaul, who retired Dec. 31, 2013.
McGrath led the department out of that period of turmoil and rose to the rank of chief in October 2016.
Lloyd will become officer-in-charge Jan. 1, 2020, according to McGrath.
