Marijuana Ordinance OK’d

By Vince Conti

AVALON – The state effort to legalize recreational marijuana for adults, a key initiative in Gov. Phil Murphy’s campaign last year, collapsed in Trenton as lawmakers could not agree on the merits of the legislation.
The failure at the state level did not deter Avalon as the governing body moved ahead with the adoption of a ban on marijuana sales and distribution within the borough. The ordinance passed unanimously April 10.
Neighboring Middle Township scheduled a public work session discussion on the issue April 15 but canceled the item on the agenda. Adopting a wait-and-see attitude to the issue, Mayor Timothy Donohue said he thought action by the township would be premature given the uncertainty at the state level.
