COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Committee adopted an ordinance July 1 requiring property owners in Del Haven to connect to Lower Township Municipal Utilities Authority (LTMUA) water mains. About 1,000 homes would be affected.
The adoption was the end of a five-year process investigating options for providing potable water to an area where saltwater intrusion is resulting in damage to private wells.
LTMUA officials said they expect design and financing issues to take approximately one year to resolve, followed by one year for construction of the water mains and the lateral attachments to private homes. The area impacted includes Del Haven and parts of adjacent communities.
The township was able to negotiate an arrangement whereby homeowners could pay the $1,600 mandatory hookup fee over five years at no interest. Those electing to do so would have an $80 charge added to their quarterly water bills for a five-year period.
