VILLAS – Lower Township Council passed the 2019 township salary ordinance Dec. 17 that includes a raise for council and the mayor of $2,500.
During the public hearing a resident commented on the timing of the raise coming after the November election.
Mayor Erik Simonsen said that pay for council members and himself was in line with other Cape May County municipalities.
“We are the largest municipality in Cape May County and number six when it comes to salary,” Simonsen explained.
Simonsen said salary for the mayor and council hasn’t changed since 2016 and must be reviewed every two years by state law.
Simonsen previously earned $18,000 as mayor, which increased to $20,500. Council members earned $15,000 before the vote and will receive $17,500.
