VILLAS – The message from Lower Township Council to transient renters is “go home.”
Council approved an emergency proclamation at its April 6 meeting, held by telephone, to prohibit short-term rentals, effective immediately, and allow police to go to the offenders and send them home.
Lower Township Mayor Frank Sippel said the measures are needed as enhanced efforts to slow the coronavirus’ spread. As of the April 6 meeting, Lower held most of the county’s cases.
According to the April 6 proclamation, all transient, seasonal, and short-term rentals in Lower Township, including hotels, motels and private residences, are prohibited from accepting seasonal guests or tenants until May 22.
“Were not going to throw people out of their rental property, but we will ask them to leave immediately and return to their primary place of residence,” said Sippel, who is also the undersheriff of Cape May County.
Sippel said criminal charges could be lodged against renters and property owners who refuse to comply with the directive.
Residents can call (609) 780-7112 or (609) 886-2005 ext. 136 to report someone at a property illegally.
Lower Township Council also approved a measure to close beaches to the public.
