Lower Police to Hold Annual Memorial Service for Fallen Officer

By Jack Fichter

VILLAS — Lower Township Police Department will mark the 15th anniversary of the line of duty death of Officer David C. Douglass.
Douglass was shot and killed on February 18, 1994 after responding to a suspicious person call in North Cape May. He was pursuing a burglary suspect on foot when the suspect turned and shot him.
Douglass returned fire, striking the suspect in the hand and was able to make it back to his patrol car to call for assistance but did not survive the attack.
Following an intensive investigation, Lower Township police arrested the actor in New York City in April of that year.
A flag raising ceremony will be held in Douglass’ honor in front of Lower Township Municipal Hall, 2600 Bayshore Road Feb. 18 at 10 a.m.
The ceremony will be followed by light refreshments inside the Township Hall meeting room.
Later in the evening at approximately 7:15 p.m., all of the township’s fire sirens will be activated in honor of Douglass who was also an active member of the Town Bank Volunteer Fire Department.
