VILLAS —Lower Township Police Department will have a new organizational structure eliminating one captain’s position, which will offer a substantial savings to the township.
Township Manager Michael Voll reported to Township Council Monday the police department will have one captain, two lieutenants, four sergeants, four corporals with the balance of the force as patrol officers for a total staff of 35 sworn officers.
Two new recruits have been hired. Both are local residents and veterans, said Voll. They will enter the county Police Academy on Aug. 29 with graduation in January.
A new captain, two lieutenants and two sergeants will be sworn in at Township Council’s Sept. 7 meeting at 7 p.m.
Voll said the police department was in a “transition period,” but the public would be very proud when all is settled.
A police substation will be opened next month in the township’s Recreation Center on Bayshore Road in Villas at no cost to taxpayers, he said.
The possibility exists of a joint, Lower and Middle township police dispatch center. Voll said an upgrade of telephone equipment by Verizon could cost up to $200,000 for each dispatch panel of which Lower Township has three.
“Everyone will agree it just doesn’t make good sense to have 11 communities buying the same equipment and repeating the same process…” he said.
