Lower MUA Awards Contract for Town Bank Expansion

By Jack Fichter

VILLAS – Lower Township Municipal Utilities Authority awarded a $2 million contract Tue., Jan. 18 for expansion of water service into the Town Bank area.
At a special meeting, MUA’s Board of Directors awarded the contract to Pioneer Pipe of Clayton N.J. for phase one of the USDA Town Bank expansion project.
MUA Executive Director Mike DeMarcantonio said 17 contractors picked up a bid package with eight bids submitted to the MUA.
The Town Bank/Villas water main expansion is scheduled to start in February with a completion date of August 2015.
The board also passed a resolution requiring residents to connect to the sewer system when it is available on their street. DeMarcantonio said while the authority had approved an ordinance requiring homeowners to connect to the water system when water mains are installed in their street, it did not cover sewer connections.
After researching the matter, he said it was discovered there was a resolution from 1969 requiring mandatory sewer connections but it did not extend beyond that time period. DeMarcantonio said 10 to 12 property owners have refused to connect to the sewer system.
“If you have a septic system that’s not working, you need to connect,” he said.
Like the mandatory water connection ordinance, homeowners who do not comply would have a lien placed on their property. Septic systems are filled in after a sewer connection is made, said DeMarcantonio.
