VILLAS – The April 18 Lower Township Council meeting brought news and a celebratory acknowledgement by the governing body for the Lower Township youth basketball program.
Councilman Erik Simonsen and Manager James Ridgway began the honors for the third and fourth grade Lower Township basketball team that won the 2016 South Shore League boys championship for the second year in a row.
Ridgway especially credited coaches, including Robert Bonner, who represented the entire coaching staff as each team member stepped forward to receive their awards from Mayor Michael Beck.
The team amassed an 18-win season as they proved that the youth of this community possess determination and will to succeed.
Beck then announced a proclamation that designated April as Alcohol Awareness Month in Lower Township. He especially pointed out that alcohol abuse factors heavily into juvenile crime for those who do not find a positive outlet such as athletics.
Beck cited statistics that show that 50 percent of juvenile crime has alcohol at its root. He stated that there are about 15 million alcohol-abusing children in the nation, and that alcohol is one of the leading causal factors in juvenile deaths.
Councilman Robert Conrad provided information from Atlantic City Electric that released a statement that customers will shortly see a $113.16 credit on a future bill because of the merger between Atlantic City Electric and Exelon Corporation.
Based on the merger agreement, customers will see this one-time credit and, according to Atlantic City Electric, other benefits will include better, more reliable service.
An ordinance enabling Cape Regional Holding LLC to deposit funds with TD Bank for site improvements at a construction site was passed.
This procedural ordinance enables the building project on Bayshore Road, near Townbank Road next to Uncle Bill’s restaurant to continue. This project is designed to create a new medical building that will include an urgent care center, a physical therapy facility and possibly other services under the auspices of Cape Regional.
