COURT HOUSE — By a margin of only 115 votes, Middle Township Republican Mayor Daniel Lockwood will be returning to his seat on Township Committee.
Lockwood said the narrow margin reminded him of a previous election where a small margin of votes cost him an election.
“Four years ago, the year before I won, where I won by eight votes on election night and lost by 88 votes the next day, I certainly understand how close this election was.”
Running against Democrat William Sturm III, Lockwood said he and his reelection team fought hard up until the last minute.
“We knew all along that this was a presidential race and the turn out was going to be huge and we’d have to work to the finish line,” said Lockwood. “I think that’s what put us over the top.”
According to Lockwood, managing Hurricane Sandy “put a huge kink” in his campaign’s progress. “We easily could have sat on our hands for the past 48 hours.”
Lockwood said he was elected to do a job. “I think that we work hard at doing the job and the voters have known the difference.”
The mayor said, “Would I have liked to have won by more votes? Yes. But this does not change my commitment to Middle Township and all of its residents from Rio Grande to Goshen and everybody in between. We’re going to keep on working.”
