WASHINGTON D.C., U.S. Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02) today praised New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s efforts to ensure New Jersey taxpayers are not on the hook for a $271 million bill authorized by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for the cancelled ARC Tunnel project.
“Governor Christie was right to cancel the ARC project due to its excessive cost over-runs and financial burden on the state. Furthermore, he is right today to challenge the Federal Transit Administration’s assertion that state taxpayers must repay the FTA for their poor planning and lack of cost controls. I stand with the Governor and New Jersey residents in support of this legal effort,” said LoBiondo, a member of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee.
It was announced earlier today that New Jersey Transit, on the orders of Governor Christie, has retained legal services to fight the FTA’s assertion that the State of New Jersey must reimburse the federal government of spent funds. In previous instances, the FTA has not issued a repayment order for projects supported by federal dollars that were subsequently cancelled before completion.
