LoBiondo Announces Funding for County Projects

By Herald Staff

WASHINGTON – The U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday, Feb. 25 approved a spending bill that would fund several Cape May County projects.
“This is certainly great news for many of our coastal communities, including Ocean City and Cape May City,” said U.S. Rep. Frank A. LoBiondo (R-2nd) in a release. “This funding represents a continued commitment by the federal government to enhance the economic strengths of South Jersey, and will continue to bolster the local economies of our coastal communities. I appreciate Senator Lautenberg’s leadership and will continue to work for additional funding for these critical projects.”
The spending bill includes:
• $3 million for beach renourishment in Ocean City’s north end from Great Egg Harbor to Peck Beach
• $2.3 million for the completion of the renourishment project in Cape May City from Cape May Inlet to Lower Township
• $1.3 for the Townsends Inlet to Cape May Inlet project, for the renourishment of sand in Stone Harbor and Avalon
• $888,000 for the dredging of the New Jersey Intercoastal Waterway;
• $239,000 for the Great Egg Harbor to Townsend Inlet project in Sea Isle City and Strathmere;
• $226,000 for the Cold Spring Inlet dredging project
• $144,000 for environmental restoration at The Lower Cape May Meadows project. It is approximately 350 acres, containing the Cape May Point State Park and the Cape May Migratory Bird Refuge. The project is designed to restore and protect fish and wildlife habitats in the area, and to reduce hurricane and storm damage to the beaches
• $96,000 for the Hereford Inlet to Cape May Inlet project – to complete a feasibility study of a shore protection project for North Wildwood, Wildwood and Wildwood Crest
• $100,000 to the Mid Atlantic Center for the Arts for the restoration of Fire Control Tower 23 in Cape May Point.
According to a release, originally within various Fiscal Year 2009 annual appropriation bills that were never considered by the full House, the final funding was included in the spending bill for the remaining 9 of 12 annual appropriations that were combined this week in an omnibus package. The House approved the spending bill today, sending the measure to the Senate.
“This funding renews the 15 year old partnership that the city, state and federal government has had in partnership to protect and promote our beaches,” Ocean City Mayor Sal Perillo said. “We appreciate the assistance Congressman LoBiondo and Senator Lautenberg have provided to our city.”
