Liquor Law Change Could Give Unlimited No. of Licenses to Municipalities

By Al Campbell

RIO GRANDE – Stone Harbor Mayor Suzanne Walters, immediate past president of the New Jersey League of Municipalities, addressed the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce March 19 on the subject of a proposed change in state liquor license rules.
“I’m on a conference call this afternoon. Assemblyman John J. Burzichelli (D-3rd), is close to (Senate President Stephen) Sweeney, (D-3rd) so it’s not a stretch (to bring the legislation into being). This bill allows municipalities in the State of New Jersey, no matter what your population is, to have an unlimited number of liquor licenses. There are two types R1, is a full liquor license, if you are a restaurant, you’re not allowed to have a bar, but your waiters and waitresses can serve drinks, the R2 is wine and beer.
“This is gaining traction. If you have thoughts about it let me know, because I’m on the committee working on this on what stand the League of Municipalities ought to take,” Walters said.
A search of the state Legislature website produced no bills of such a proposal.
