STONE HARBOR – The early loss of lifeguards at the end of the summer is “worse than ever this year,” Stone Harbor Beach Patrol Capt. Sandy Bosacco told borough council Aug. 21.
Bosacco said he had the manpower for seven stands at a time of year when he used to have up to 16.
Bosacco pointed to early starts for high school sports programs and a growing number of colleges beginning the fall term earlier as factors in the loss of guards late in the borough’s summer.
“We will be fine for Labor Day,” Bosacco said, referring to the number of guards who return for that holiday weekend.
He was less upbeat about coverage in the still-busy period immediately following Labor Day.
“We will cover the normally busiest beaches in order to benefit the most people,” he said.
