COURT HOUSE – The Cape May County Library hosts a lecture on winter botany. Joe Alvarez will discuss winter botany at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at the Cape May Court House Library located at 30 Mechanic Street.
Winter is a fantastic time to study woody plants. When the camouflage of leaves disappears, the true silhouette of a plant is revealed. Through examination, some simple keys and field guides, you can learn to appreciate and identify the bark, buds, shape and habitat characteristics of many of the local trees and wood plants.
Additionally, participants can venture on a native plant tour/winter botany at the Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22. The tour will be approximately two hours in duration.
Alvarez has a bachelor of science degree, is a board member of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge and is a certified Rutgers master gardener.
