WEST WILDWOOD – After a closed-door executive session March 11, West Wildwood commissioners approved a $215,000 settlement for a former part-time police officer.
The former officer, Jeremy Mawhinney, sued the borough, saying he was fired for writing tickets to political allies of Mayor Christopher Fox, and that he was directed to target residents who did not support Fox’s politics.
Fox, who was a named party in the litigation, along with the borough and Police Chief Jacquelyn Ferentz, did not participate in the 2-0 vote to settle the case. Fox and Ferentz’s names were reportedly dropped from the suit in mediation.
The borough will pay the insurance deductible of $20,000 and co-pays, according to reports, leaving the Joint Insurance Fund to pay for the remainder of the settlement.
“Given the cost it would entail to take the matter to trial, settlement was in the borough’s interest,” Commissioner Scott Golden said, in a statement.
