COURT HOUSE – Results of the Middle Township Open Space and Recreation survey are coming in, showing strong support for open space. 150 households have responded, and favor using open space for recreation, wildlife habitat, and maintaining the rural character of the community. The survey is available at www.middletownship.com through Nov. 30. Paper copies are available at the Clerk’s Office in Township Hall, as well as the Martin Luther King Center and the Baker Center at the Davies Recreation Complex on Goshen Road.
Other results to date show the top three activities enjoyed by respondents as walking/hiking, biking, and fishing/crabbing. Respondents’ top facilities on a wish list are more trails, playgrounds, boat/kayak ramp and launches, and an indoor swimming pool.
Wildlife, organized fitness events, and historic preservation are also values held by the community. There was a strong interest in an annual festival celebrating the Delaware Bay, as well as runs, bike races and tournaments, and historic tours.
Just over 50% of the respondents are from Cape May Court House, with the balance from throughout the Township and outside the Township. Considering the area is tourism based, the survey was open to non-residents. The project team has been working to get participation from all parts of the Township, especially regarding the Ockie Wisting site (formerly Fort Apache Campground) in Rio Grande.
There will be a public meeting in January to follow up on the results of the survey, and discuss the issues in greater detail. Middle Township was awarded $8,000 by the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions to develop the Plan.
