COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Committee adopted an ordinance July 15, which authorizes the lease of township lots in Whitesboro to the U.S. Postal Service.
For the governing body, the action served as a culmination of a long effort to retain a post office in the community. Postal Service officials were considering closing the post office in Whitesboro and directing activities to larger facilities in either Court House or Rio Grande.
The site will be at the northeast corner of Main Street and Route 9, which also is the location of the George Henry White Memorial. White was one of the founders of the community. The municipality requested Congress name the post office in White’s memory.
Mayor Timothy Donohue said the ordinance only addressed the lease of township land. The design and construction of the post office must go through the approval processes with the Planning Board. Members of the community will have opportunities to comment on the design.
