VILLAS – Buildings without house numbers present a continuing problem for police and fire personnel in Lower Township.
When an address cannot be quickly located by public safety providers, response time is slowed, according to Lower Township Manager Mike Voll. He said residents may not realize the danger of having a home or business without visible numbers until there is a medical emergency, a fire, a burglary in progress or other serious crime at their home.
“Police and other public safety components cannot get there immediately if they can’t identify the location where help is needed,” he stated.
Voll said house numbers are inexpensive and available at hardware stores. Numbers are required on all residences and businesses in Lower Township, he said.
“The life you save may be your own,” said Voll.
He suggested an organization such as scouts may want to consider a community project to provide numbers for homes, in particular, for residences of the elderly or disabled.
