VILLAS – Jacqueline Henderson was sworn in to office on Sept. 17 to fill the vacancy left by former Ward 3 Councilman Glenn Douglass. She will serve on council until the November 5 election. At that time voters will choose between Erik Simonsen, Thomas F. Will, Glenn Douglass, and George F. Doherty to serve until November 2014 when the seat is again up for reelection.
Henderson was one of three potential candidates submitted to Lower Township Council by the local Republican organization, but she was still shocked to hear of her nomination. She asked that she be sworn in the following day so that her husband could attend the ceremony.
“She would be a pretty good friend to Ward 3 and what we’re trying to accomplish with seeing to it that the voters are keen on voting ‘No’ and ‘No’ on the dissolution of the school,” said Councilman James Neville. He continued to say that Henderson has volunteered for the West Cape May Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and her contacts within those organizations will help West Cape May and Cape May City vote against Cape May City’s attempt to withdrawal from the regional school district.
Deputy Mayor Norris Clark enthusiastically seconded Neville’s nomination. Councilman Thomas Conrad and Mayor Michael Beck also agreed that Henderson was a good choice for the position.
Henderson, 43, moved to Cape May County in 1994. Prior to relocating, Henderson worked for a large mortgage firm in Mount Laurel. She is married to Cape May Police Detective Doug Henderson and they have two children, Nick and Kelly.
After Beck referred to Henderson’s new title as ‘Councilperson,’ and then ‘Council Lady,’ Henderson jokingly said she would be known as ‘Council Mama.’
