CAPE MAY – J. Fred Coldren died at his home Jan. 29, 2014, according to his wife, Diane.
He was former business manager of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry and historian for the 50th anniversary of the ferry.
Earlier in his career, he was managing editor for the Avalon Herald in 1968, forerunner of the present Cape May County Herald. Coldren recollected driving his van to hand deliver the Herald overnight to stores and residences. He also worked as a reporter for the Wildwood Leader and for the Atlantic City Press.
Coldren had been a congressional aide for the late Charles W. Sandman at the end of 1970, who represented the Second Congressional District.
He had been a Cape May city councilman and city manager.
Coldren was active with the Boy Scouts of America, and had been active in major fund raising for the local district.
He was a hearing officer for several municipalities in Cape May County. He was a founding member, and remained active with Cape Issues, a group of citizen volunteers whose goal it is to assist the public to understand how government entities could work to maximize their efficiency.
Ever interested in technology, Coldren wrote to the Herald about working in the newspaper field, “I’ve enjoyed keeping up with modern technology ever since, but think fondly of the progress over the past 48 years since I arrived here.”
Family and friends are invited to a remembrance at his home Feb. 2 from 1-4 pm. To share condolences, visit www.evoyfuneralhome.com
