DENNISVILLE – The main topic at the Dennis Township Committee meeting June 17 was the heat. It was noticeable that there was no air-conditioning in the room where committee meets. During the public comment portion of the meeting, Michele Heim, a township employee, asked what committee was going to do about the lack of air conditioning in half the building, which includes the meeting room.
Heim contended that this was not a recent problem and that committee had promised to take care of it as recently as December. Township engineer John Gibson was questioned about how long it would take to resolve the problem. Gibson said it would require an ordinance. After that he would have to solicit bids, review them and then make a decision. The process would take at least six weeks and perhaps more. The summer would be almost over.
At this point someone from the audience asked if this would differ if an “emergency” were declared?
“You can’t sell creative emergencies,” said township Solicitor Jeff April. He said he was not sure a lack of air-conditioning really fell within the definition of a true emergency. “I am leery of calling it an emergency,” advised April.
“Well I think it is an emergency,” declared Mayor John Murphy.
April then advised that Gibson might get a price at which point committee could have a phone meeting and decide if it is an emergency.
