OCEAN CITY — Don’t panic, it is only a drill.
At approximately 1 p.m. Thur., April 14, a Level II lockdown will be announced at Ocean City High School.
Once the school is in lockdown, a “scripted” 911 call will be made by school officials to Ocean City Police Department Communications Center. The scenario for the drill will be an active shooter.
This part of the drill will be similar to all the other OCPD drills in the past. An Ocean City Police Department response will follow and the situation will change from an active shooter to a static situation.
Mutual aid will be requested through the command post and designated staging areas will be assigned.
The school will then be evacuated to the football field where school officials will conduct their individual accountability measures. From the football field, all students and faculty will be dismissed. Students can walk to their vehicle and/or take the bus which will be re-routed to the 5th Street parking lot.
This will be pre-planned with school officials and the bus contractor.
As the school is being dismissed, the drill will be in a “timeout” phase in order for safety officers to conduct a search of the school to ensure that it is fully evacuated.
After this safety check, the drill will proceed involving several tactical teams and law enforcement agencies. Barricades will be erected simultaneously with school dismissal. This will be coordinated with the assistance of Ocean City Public Works.
Drill Area.
The drill area will encompass the corridor from Asbury Avenue to the Boardwalk involving the 500 blks. Streets will be blocked off a block north and south of the high school along that corridor. **Should be noted that this area will not be barricaded until after school dismissal**
Notifications
The drill itself will be heavily advertised and will be no surprise to the students, community, and all Law Enforcement agencies involved.
TIME FRAME
The initial stage of the drill will begin at approximately 1 p.m. We expect that mutual aid will start arriving shortly after the request by the incident commander. Students/Faculty will be dismissed at their usual time of 2:25 p.m.
Safety checks of the school will be conducted and at approximately 3 pm, the second phase of the drill will begin. We are estimating that the drill will last approximately three hours to 6 pm.
A breakdown of the drill will take approximately one hour to 7 pm. At this time, traffic patterns will be restored.
