STONE HARBOR – Over 43,000 fire departments in the nation go through the voluntary Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating process. On a scale of 1 (best) to 10 (worst), only 12 percent of those departments attain a score of 3 or better. That puts the Stone Harbor Fire Department in a select company.
On June 19, Fire Chief Roger Stanford told borough council that the department recently went through the every-three-year rating process, advancing from a 4 to a 3 rating.
The ISO rating is one of the factors considered by insurers when they underwrite and set premiums for local home fire insurance. Other factors being equal, a community with an ISO score of 3 will see lower insurance premiums than one with a score of 8.
The ISO rating is more than a barometer for expected property premiums. It is also a measure of a department’s readiness to do its job.
