Island Water Overboard

By Leslie Truluck

AVALON — New Jersey American Water Company projects a trend in which Avalon might exceed its monthly water allocation by 2.2 million gallons, Engineer Thomas Thornton told Borough Council at its July 23 meeting here.
Last month the borough enacted outdoor water use restrictions requiring residents to reduce water usage with an even-odd system in which residents’ addresses indicate whether they may water lawns and gardens on even or odd days of the month.
He said while a downward trend in usage is apparent, it’s still possible the borough could exceed its annual water allocation.
“Water conservation efforts seem to be working but we must continue to encourage it,” he said.
