VILLAS – There have been two recent issues dealing with chickens in residential neighborhoods in Lower Township that violate the current ordinance.
Township Manager Michael Voll has sent the issue to the Lower Township Planning Board for their review. Currently, the lot size calls for 1 acre to have small domestic farm animals.
“Township Council realizes that during these tough economic times, many families are into organic gardens and some raising chickens in their backyards,” said Voll in press release. “However, Township Code Enforcement must deal with these issues and enforce the current ordinances on the books.”
The chicken matter will be discussed at the Nov. 10 Planning Board meeting. Any resident who wishes to comment on this ordinance should plan on attending this meeting.
After the Planning Board has reviewed this matter, they may make a recommendation to the Township Council to amend the current ordinance. Ultimately, the decision rests with town council to keep or amend the current ordinance, said Voll.
