CREST HAVEN – All the inmates were safely transferred to the new Cape May County Correctional Facility Jan. 14, according to a release.
Cape May County Sheriff Robert Nolan credited the Correctional staff with assistance from the County Prosecutor’s Office and all local police departments that participated in the orderly transfer.
The facility is located next to the old correctional center, which will be demolished in the future. The need for a new jail arose as the old building was not conforming to state code and was becoming too costly to maintain.
“We have a great team here at the Sheriff’s Office,” stated Nolan. “I would like to thank the Corrections Officers transition team, county Facilities and Services employees and other county departments who have been working tirelessly especially over recent weeks to make this transfer work so well.”
The freeholders decided to build a new jail based on the options that were available. Closing the old jail and sending local prisoners to other counties would have cost more than $12 million annually, which would have exceeded the cost to build a new jail in roughly three years.
The issues with rehabilitating the old jail were too prohibitive to become a viable option, the release stated.
“We needed to protect our corrections officers, and this new facility gives them a safe work environment,” stated Freeholder Leonard Desiderio, liaison to the Sheriff’s Office. “Sheriff Nolan has done a great job finishing off this project and ensuring safety for all involved.”
