Indian Trail Friends Honored

By Joe Hart

SANDY HOOK –– Two “Friends of Indian Trail” in Burleigh are being honored by a national environmental group for their efforts to stop a mining project in Middle Township.
Ralph and Lois Shuman have been selected to receive the American Littoral Society’s 2007 Citizen Advocate award for “their work to protect sensitive ecosystems and to promote sustainable development in your community,” according to group spokesperson Eileen Kennedy.
The Littoral Society is a advocacy group that empowers people to care for coastal environments.
The Shumans have worked tirelessly to oppose Albrecht and Heun’s gravel pit and recycling facility application, which is now before the township zoning board.
The couple is a regular fixture at municipal meetings and has blanketed the town with environmental information explaining the possible negative effects this project could cause for the township.
