Hudanich Takes Avalon Presidency, McCorristin Named Vice President

Council President Nancy Hudanich accepts gavel from former Council President Richard Dean.

AVALON – Avalon Borough Council held its reorganization meeting July 1. The annual meeting conducts little business. Its focus is on the selection of council officers.
This year, Council member Nancy Hudanich was unanimously selected as council president with John McCorristin named as council vice president.
The selection followed the borough’s long-standing practice of rotating the two positions with the current vice president always the next to step up.
Hudanich was first elected to council in 1989 in a contested election that saw a clean sweep of three newcomers onto the governing body. Hudanich, whose doctorate is in education, was then a teacher at Middle Township High School.
She currently serves as superintendent of the Cape May County Technical School District.
Hudanich has served on the borough’s Budget, Finance, and Technology Committee, along with the Insurance and Recreation committees.
Her service is credited with helping to achieve Avalon’s AAA credit rating from Standard and Poor’s and its 25 percent discount on flood insurance premiums.
McCorristin is a relative newcomer to a borough council characterized by long terms of service. He was elected as part of “Team Avalon 2013” when he ran with David Ellenberg, who resigned and relocated, and Hudanich.
McCorristin has lived in Avalon as a full-time resident since 1968 and is the owner of McCorristin Construction LLC. He served as a member of the borough’s school board for 18 years and as president of that board for 12.
McCorristin’s appointment as vice president signals that he is next in line for the council president position in 2017.
He currently serves on the Public Works and Public Safety committees and has been active in the development of the borough library which has earned an annual five-star rating.
Continuing on council are Charles Covington, Richard Dean, and William Burns.
Council voted to maintain its current meeting schedule for 2016-2017 with meetings at 4 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month and at 7 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday.
