CAPE MAY – During the Cape May City Council’s Jan. 16 meeting, City Engineer Thomas Thornton provided an update on the design phase of a project to reconstruct Pennsylvania Avenue.
While the project will deal with the customary issues of road work, it will also include in the bid documents option for traffic calming.
In earlier meetings, Coast Guard representatives addressed the issue asking for some action to reduce speeders on the long, wide road. The area is the main entrance to the Coast Guard Training Center and also houses some military families with young children.
An earlier presentation by Thornton outlined three options for traffic calming, an engineer’s term for the incorporation of safety solutions that reduce the speed of traffic. Each option involved reduces the lanes in the wide road through the use of either a physical median or road striping.
According to Mayor Clarence Lear, the bid documents contain options so the council can see the financial impact of each while maintaining the flexibility to choose.
Thornton expected an award of the project in February with the completion of the project by June.
