Hayes Takes Freeholder Oath, Joins Board

By Al Campbell

CREST HAVEN — Freeholder E. Marie Hayes took her oath of office Feb. 1 at noon with her husband, Lloyd, at her side and son, Lloyd, both holding the Bible. Surrogate M. Susan Sheppard presided at the brief ceremony.
Hayes will serve in the seat vacated by Surrogate M. Susan Sheppard until Dec. 31.
She expects to run with Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton in the November election for a full term.
Hayes was selected by county Republican committee members at a convention held in Clermont Jan. 30. In that process, she outpolled Stig Blomkvest 123-89. Both had agreed whoever was victorious would have the others support.
Hayes served 29 years in the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and rose through the ranks from sergeant, lieutenant and finally to the rank of Captain of Detectives. During the majority of her career she was assigned to Child Abuse and Sexual Assault investigations.
She received her Associate Degree from Atlantic Cape Community College where, until this year, she was an adjunct professor teaching criminal investigation.
She received a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, with a concentration in Criminal Justice from Thomas Edison State College, and is a 1996 graduate of the FBI National Academy, Quantico, Va.
An Ocean City resident, Hayes and Lloyd, her husband of 32 years, have three children, Lloyd and two grown daughters, Megan and Danielle, a son in law, Vince and six grandchildren.
Thornton said Hayes’ departmental assignments will be finalized by the Feb. 12 meeting. He said she may assume departments of Tourism, Parks and Museum, and others.
