CAPE MAY – After a special meeting April 14 dedicated to discussing possible budget shortfalls, Cape May City Council adopted its 2020 budget April 21.
The budget was adopted with council members Zack Mullock and Stacy Sheehan opposed to passing a budget with revenue assumptions “we all know will not be met.” Those revenues are dependent directly or indirectly on the influx of tourists and second homeowners, who raise the city’s population each summer.
Discussions at earlier meetings revolved around cutting expenses from the budget, given the ongoing harm the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown is doing to the city’s tourist economy. In the end, by a split 3-2 vote, which has become customary for resolutions with any controversy attached to them, the council elected to adopt the total $32.2 million budget, as it was introduced before the spread of COVID-19.
The total budget includes a $20.6 million general operating fund along with three separate utilities for water/sewer, beach and tourism operations.
