WILDWOOD CREST ─ Elected in 2005, Groon served as mayor and commissioner of Public Safety, overseeing improvements and improving quality of life for residents and guests.
Commissioner Joyce Gould presented Groon with the proclamation, remarking he “served dutifully.”
“It has been my honor,” said Gould, referring to her tenure in working alongside Groon as deputy mayor.
Gould will serve another term, along with reelected Commissioner Don Cabrera and new Commissioner David Thompson.
Emotion encompassed the room as Gould embraced Groon and extended him best wishes for the future.
Groon thanked fellow commissioners and residents. “It couldn’t be better,” said Groon. He thanked department heads and praised the staff as “the best.”
Cabrera referred to Groon “As a second father.” Cabrera began his tenure in public office in 2005 as well and jokingly called Groon “Poppy.”
“We butted heads then,” Cabrera reflected, “but we always found the same path. I have a lot of respect for you.”
Several residents praised Groon for his integrity in spite of disagreements. Controversies have shaken the borough, yet those who spoke thanked Groon for his honesty in answering questions.
Borough Solicitor Doreen Corino said that the Dec. 27 meeting might also be her “last meeting.” The commissioners had sought resumes for the position she held.
“It’s my honor, my pride, and joy,” Corino said. “It’s a change, but it’s good. Thank you for the opportunity to service the borough.”
Groon publicly wished Thompson “all the best” in 2018.
