COURT HOUSE – The public at Middle Township Committee’s Dec. 3 meeting expressed concern over two years of sizable and unexpected increases in Cape May County Municipal Utility Authority (MUA) fees. The fees are based on the township’s percentage share of sewage flow to MUA treatment plants. The 14 municipalities served by the MUA share the utility’s fixed and variable costs based on formulas tied to flow.
Committee member Timothy Donohue suggested that the township should get three seats on the seven-member MUA Board of Commissioners given that it is one of its larger customers.
Unbudgeted expenses from the MUA to the township have totaled $750,000 in the last two years, leaving many taxpayers wanting better answers about what steps the municipality needs to take in response to the emerging annual problem.
