CREST HAVEN – Concern about vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed by her Corson’s Tavern Road home drove Deborah Cannizzo to the freeholders’ podium Sept. 25.
No stranger to the alleged problem, Cannizzo, a 34-year-resident, had attended Dennis Township Committee’s Sept. 11 meeting and voiced similar sentiments. When she was told the highway was under county jurisdiction, she vowed to attend that next freeholder meeting.
Part of Cannizzo’s concern is for children who attend the school at South Seaville United Methodist Church, as well as for others, her autistic grandson being another.
While telling the board about the speeders, she also cited the rumble strips that “make a lot of noise which is irritating; it’s very loud.”
She asked that the county consider getting “rid of the passing zone in front of all those houses and get rid of the (rumble) strip.”
County Engineer Robert Church said there was no provision for the county to install radar on the county road. That would have to go through the state Legislature.
He said the county has a message sign that first warns drivers they are exceeding the limit with a stroke light. The next message is “violation” while the last proclaims, “violation.”
Any change in speed limit would have to follow a traffic consultant’s study, Church said. He added that his office is expecting a report from that consultant “in the near future.”
“The thing that matters is enforcement,” said Church.
Cannizzo said she had witnessed motorists passing a stopped school bus with its lights activated.
