Governor Christie Signs Fiocchi Vo-Tech Education Bills

By Press Release

TRENTON — Assemblyman Sam Fiocchi lauded the vocational and technical school bills signed into law by Gov. Christie. Fiocchi co-sponsors four bills that help high school graduates obtain jobs through improved career development programs and improved monitoring of a student’s progress in the classroom. The four bills (A-3334, A-3335, A-3337 and A-3338) received unanimous approval in each house of the Legislature.
“There are thousands of jobs waiting to be filled, but employers say they can’t find qualified workers because of ‘the skills gap,’” said Fiocchi, R-Cumberland, Cape May and Atlantic. “We need to equip our students with the skill set required for available jobs.
“Many aspects of the marketplace are changing and we have to stay ahead of the curve,” continued Fiocchi. “Historically, the focus has been almost exclusively on college entrance and completion, but left behind the notion of work-force education. Vocational training can help secure and immediate well-paying position in the workforce. These bills will help prepare students with marketable, in-demand skills.”
The legislation signed into law includes the following:
• A-3334 requires schools to include evaluation of student career readiness on report cards to help prepare them for real-world jobs.
• A-3335 requires colleges to train new teachers to include a professional development course in employability skills, career awareness, and understanding career and technical education.
• A-3337 permits the development of new career programs in locations other than a vocational school, capitalizing on the availability of underutilized facility space.
• A-3338 increases the availability of college-level instruction for high school students through dual enrollment agreements between colleges and high schools.
