Girl Scouts Mark Centennial with Freeholders

By Al Campbell

CREST HAVEN – It’s not often freeholders are offered a tray of Girl Scout cookies, but to mark the organization’s centennial, members from 12 Cape May County troops visited the freeholder meeting Feb. 28 and did just that.
During the brief photo op with the board, the girls, under supervision of Ellen Byrne, service manager, seized the moment to administer oaths to Freeholder Vice Director M. Susan Sheppard and Freeholder Kristine Gabor. The latter had never been a scout while the former was a past member.
The scouts represented over 400 throughout the county who are guided by “almost 100 adult members” and two service managers, Byrne and Herbert Siefken.
The board passed a resolution attesting to the milestone year in Girl Scouting. It also noted that over 50 million American women have been or remain Girl Scouts. The organization, said Byrne, is about “building girls’ courage, character and commitment.”
She also asked freeholders if, when a county girl attains the Gold Award, the highest rank in Girl Scouts, equivalent to Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts, if one of them would attend the ceremony. She was assured they would. A little known fact, a Girl Scout who has earned her Gold Award immediately raises one rank in any of the U.S. military branches.
Girls Scouts was founded by Juliette Gordon Low who organized the first Girl Scout troop on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Ga. Long an American institution, Girl Scouts of the USA was chartered by Congress on March 16, 1950. Today, there are 3.2 million Girl Scouts — 2.3 million girl members and 880,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers.
