Get the Lead Out, of Academy Range

CREST HAVEN – Getting the lead out was one of the items freeholders approved July 28.
For $24,000, Lee Matt LLC of Mays Landing was contracted to remove lead from the county Police Academy firing range.
For that grant-funded amount the firm will, according to Purchasing Director Kevin Lare, retrieve all the lead a quarter inch or larger from the berm behind targets during a 10-day work period.
Then, it will be up to the company to recycle the lead in a certified recycling facility. It must provide to the county certification that the lead was recycled, Lare said.
Lee Matt LLC was the lowest of three bidders for the job, Lare added. The highest bid was $54,000.
One of the details in the contract was that the firm will reap whatever “benefit” it can from the recycling facility. Had the county elected to receive that sum, Lare said the bid might not have been as low.
Also included in the contract is that the firm will restore the berm to its original height. The range is used not only by academy recruits, but also county police departments as their officers requalify on the range.
Judicial Chambers
At the same meeting the board approved a lease with the state Department of Treasury for 130 Justice Way, off Moore Road, that will serve as judicial chambers. The agreement will be in effect through June 30, 2025.
Re-bid Electrical Modifications
County Engineer Dale Foster explained a resolution, later approved by freeholders, to re-bid a contract for electrical service modifications to Middle Thorofare Bridge in Lower Township.
He said the present arrangement has Atlantic City Electric bringing primary service to the bridge, with transformers on site to reduce the power to needed strength. The new arrangement will have power supplied outside the bridge. The new configuration will improve reliability, said Foster. The reason for the re-bid will be to seek a lower price, closer to budgeted level.
Point Traffic Study
Stantec Consulting Services Inc. received a contract for $40,375 to perform a traffic study in Cape May Point.
“They have an issue with speeding through there,” said Foster as one of the reasons for the contract. There are also drainage issues which the study will scrutinize.
Storm Repairs
Nearly three years after Superstorm Sandy ravaged ocean-front highways the county is moving ahead with funding for repairs to Ocean Drive, in Avalon at the approach to Townsend’s Inlet Bridge, and in the area of Russ Chattin Bridge to Corson’s Inlet Bridge.
Two resolutions established terms of reimbursement of federal and state funds for repairs caused by the storm.
Due to the federal dollars received, Foster said his office had to do “a full-blown” amount of documentation. Once authorized bids will be sought for the repairs.
