CREST HAVEN — Cape May County senior citizens residents living in apartment housing, who cannot get management to respond to their concerns about health and safety issues, have someone to call: Cape May County Department of Aging and Disabilities Services.
Freeholder Kristine Gabor made it known at the Tue., June 12 freeholder meeting she is “Not here to micromanage” but will “Step in whether it’s government owned, state owned or privately owned, we want to make sure seniors have a safe and pleasant life in Cape May County.”
She vowed to “Work to rectify any problems they (seniors) have,” regarding housing safety issues.
“There has been an issue brewing for quite a while,” said Gabor. She then cited a story in the Herald May 23 that chronicled conditions at Victorian Towers in Cape May. That facility is operated by Diocesan Housing Services of the Diocese of Camden.
“Issues have arisen in the building of maintenance concerns,” said Gabor. Pointing to the apartment’s tenants’ association that raised concerns, Gabor said she “Took the bull by the horns” to intercede for residents there.
“In the meantime, there is another, Haven House in North Cape May,” Gabor said, and stated she had plans to meet June 15 with Curtis Johnson, executive director of Diocesan Housing Services to address “management and safety issues” there.
Additionally, Gabor said the county Office of Emergency Management has “concerns about safety issues at that (Haven House) building. They (OEM) will have a special meeting,” Gabor added.
